A fishing village reinvents itself.

Heiligenhafen has everything that tourists on the Baltic Sea could wish for: The focus is on the extensive beach, bordered by dunes with fine sand and a good 900 beach chairs. The fishing harbour with the largest deep-sea fishing fleet in Germany, the fish stands at the harbour and an attractive marina with 1000 berths also provide the typical maritime flair. The steep coast, west of the seaside resort, sets special accents just as much as the Graswarder bird sanctuary with its colourful, historic beach houses.

In the small centre, which is characterised by brick buildings, the early Gothic town church and the market square with its old town houses and the restored town hall are worth seeing. A half-timbered pearl is the historic salt store, which today houses a popular restaurant. If you want to get to know the town better, follow the guided tour on the tracks of the legendary fisherman Stüben.

The former fishing village, which since the 1970s has been indulging above all in mass tourism with its apartment holiday park cast in concrete, has understood the signs of the times. In recent years, massive investments have been made in a new, modern infrastructure. Visible signs are the two new promenades along the artificially created lake, a pretty holiday home complex and last but not least the zigzag-shaped, 435-metre-long pier. It was designed as an adventure promenade, is partly two-storeyed and offers a completely glazed sea lounge. It is even possible to get married there.

Following the changes at the Steinwarder, a new, modern motorhome parking space for 99 mobiles was created at great expense at the holiday park. It is not least a good starting point for tours to the island of Fehmarn. It can be reached quickly via the characteristic Fehmarnsund Bridge, known as the "Clothes Hanger Bridge". From here, the famous Vogelfluglinie continues directly to Lolland, Falster and Seeland in Denmark.

Arrival:
From Hamburg, take the A 1 motorway in the direction of Lübeck and continue to Heiligenhafen.

Another tip:
On the way to Heiligenhafen or back south, many destinations in the Lübeck Bay are recommended. Especially the old Hanseatic city of Lübeck is definitely worth an extended stroll.
